4WD Equipment

Although its probably not necessary to have all of the following equipment, it would help if some of us had these items to ensure everyone’s safe arrival back home. Trips are generally suitable for families so we don’t expect extreme 4WDing.

  1. A CB radio. More information below.
  2. Air compressor. We may need to lower tyre pressures to get through some spots.
  3. General recovery gear, snatch strap, etc
  4. Spade
  5. Jack

CB Radio

There are two main types in use - UHF and AM (27MHz). The organisers are carrying both, although most people are now on UHF and therefore this is the preferred option.

Generally vehicle based units are preferable since they are higher powered. Good units can be purchased at various electronics and car radio shops. Information on the most common and recommended brands can be found at http://gme.net.au and http://www.uniden.com.au

Handheld units at below $100 are also readily available. They lack in power and clarity but are a possible starting point.

If you are really stuck on the day, handheld units may be able to be borrowed from someone. Please ask.

We prefer to use Channel 26, although this may be altered on the day if the channel is occupied.
